Aerodynamicist

Scaled is a composites company specializing in designing, building, and testing proof-of-concept aircraft. Scaled, the creator of landmark aircraft and spacecraft like Virgin’s GlobalFlyer, the Stratolaunch carrier, and Virgin Galactic’s WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo, is at the epicenter of experimental aviation. We are 650 exceptionally talented and creative people pursuing aerospace breakthroughs in Mojave, California. The challenge of conquering the never‐been‐done, the enthusiasm generated when concept comes to fruition, and the buzz you feel collaborating with creative people with common purpose is the unique Scaled environment that can be summed up in one word: fun.

Summary:
The aerodynamicist will design, analyze, build, and test prototype experimental aircraft in a fast-paced research and development environment. The work will span preliminary design, critical design development, experimental flight test engineering, and post flight data reduction.  The role often requires acting independently to perform simulation analysis, plan and execute CFD analysis, and plan/execute/support flight tests.

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Completing a variety of conceptual and preliminary design studies in a thorough, imaginative, and practical manner
• Analyzing aerodynamic loads, performance, stability, and control using empirical methods, hand calculations, vortex lattice codes, CFD, and flight test data
• CFD setup and analysis of internal and external flow and post processing of associated solutions
• Employing a pilot-in-the-loop simulator to conduct performance and handling qualities evaluations
• Documenting analysis
• Supporting flight test planning, execution, data reduction, and aircraft modifications
• Work on multiple projects at the same time

Required:
• A complete understanding of fluid dynamic technical principles, theories, concepts, and design/analysis methods
• Thorough understanding of aircraft sizing, performance, and stability and control
• Strong problem solving, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Strong team player
• Strong knowledge of aerospace technologies and products
• Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited institution
• Proficiency in 3D CAD
• Ability to work in multiple engineering disciplines on an aggressive schedule
• A minimum of three years of directly related aircraft work experience
• Familiarity with aeronautical analysis tools (STAR-CCM+, vortex lattice codes, DATCOM, MATLAB, etc.)
• Proof of U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain DOD clearance

Desired:
• Flight test or wind tunnel test experience
• Hands-on composites fabrication and assembly experience
• Rapid prototyping experience
• Aircraft home-building experience
• Pilot’s license
• DoD secret clearance
• Additional degrees or additional relevant work experience

Essential job functions:
• Occasionally required to stand, walk and sit for prolonged periods of time
• Manual dexterity and coordination are required (e.g., to operate computer keyboard)
