Summary:
The Materials and Process Engineer will support the design, build, and test of prototype experimental aircraft in a fast-paced research and development environment. This role requires both a sound knowledge of the practical and theoretical application of composites to aerospace structures. This work includes developing materials and processes suitable for new projects and supporting the existing projects with liaison support as required and will frequently include test design, support and documentation. This individual will provide technical input in the selection of materials for design, fabrication, and assembly of composite parts and structures, failure analysis, and technical collaboration with suppliers. The engineer will develop and maintain the knowledge base of the materials and processes used on projects.

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Support the design, development, and test of experimental aircraft to meet program requirements in a rapid prototyping environment.
• Evaluate alternative composite materials and processes that improve properties by performing trade studies, manufacturing trials and coupon testing.
• Lead process development activities through a demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging manufacturing/process techniques to support objectives of new programs.
• Support new business development and proposal activities
• Develop material and process specifications through collaboration with manufacturing and vendors
• Perform materials related failure investigations to determine root cause and corrective actions by the inspection, analysis and testing of parts
• Develop and execute composite material qualification plans, including fabrication and testing plans
• Working on multiple projects at the same time

Required:
• A strong understanding of composite manufacturing and assembly
• Experience with mechanical lamina (coupon) testing using best practice test methodology
• Experience with design reviews, trade studies, and the repair processes for composite materials used in aerospace structures
• Strong problem solving, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Strong team player
• Proficiency in 3D Computer Aided Design
• Bachelor of Science in a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited institution, or substantial equivalent experience
• Ability to work in multiple engineering disciplines on an aggressive schedule
• A minimum of three years of directly related work experience
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a DOD clearance

Desired:
• Experience with chemical and mechanical test methods, composite tooling, and composite inspection
• Proficiency in Catia V5 or Solidworks
• 2D drawing creation
• Rapid prototyping experience
• Aircraft homebuilding experience
• Pilot’s License
• DOD Secret Clearance
• Additional degrees or relevant work experience

Essential Job Functions:
• Occasionally required to stand, walk and sit for prolonged periods of time
• Manual dexterity and coordination are required (e.g., to operate computer keyboard)
• Requires mobility (e.g., climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl)
• Requires the ability to bend and reach
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
• Vision at close distances and the ability to adjust focus
