Structural Design Engineer

Summary:
The Structural Design Engineer will design, build, and test prototype experimental aircraft in a fast-paced research and development environment. The work will span conceptual to detail design, part and assembly design, system design, manufacturing support, and flight test support. Typically, this work includes design and manufacture of the primary structural elements and their integration into the overall vehicle.

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Design the primary and secondary load paths for the vehicle
• Conceptual design, structural layout, sizing, and detail design
• Generation of fabrication and assembly work instructions
• Create 3D/2D definition of parts, assemblies and installations.
• Stress analysis using classical and finite element methods
• Establish manufacturing tolerances for production of structural components
• Participate in the engineering review, approval, and release process.
• Review of manufacturing plans and procedures to ensure compliance with design requirements
• Creation of structural test plans which will be used to verify manufacturing processes meet design intent and requirements.
• Hands-on manufacturing and assembly support
• Supporting ground and flight test planning, test execution, and aircraft modifications
• Working on multiple projects at the same time

Required:
• Foundation knowledge of aircraft load paths and structural sizing
• A strong understanding of composite manufacturing and assembly
• Proficiency in GD&T
• Strong problem solving, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Strong team player
• Proficiency in 3D Computer Aided Design
• Ability to work in multiple engineering disciplines on an aggressive schedule
• A minimum of three years of directly related work experience
• Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant engineering discipline from an accredited institution or substantial equivalent experience
• Proof of U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain a DOD clearance

Desired:
• Proficiency in Catia V5 or Solidworks
• 2D drawing creation
• Proficiency in FEMAP or other finite element analysis software
• Rapid prototyping experience
• Aircraft homebuilding experience or other hands-on design or build experience
• Pilot’s License
• DOD Secret Clearance
• Additional degrees or additional relevant work experience

Essential Job Functions:
• Occasionally required to stand, walk and sit for prolonged periods of time
• Manual dexterity and coordination are required (e.g., to operate computer keyboard)
• Requires mobility (e.g., climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl)
• Requires the ability to bend and reach
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
• Vision at close distances and the ability to adjust focus
