Scaled Composites to bring two aircraft to Aviation Nation 2025

Scaled Composites, known for rapid development and flight test of unconventional aircraft, is bringing two aircraft to Aviation Nation 2025. The Model 281 Proteus and a Model 401 Sierra are being brought by the Mojave-based company to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV for static display on April 5-6, 2025.

Aviation Nation 2025 marks the first time a Model 401 Sierra will be on public display, providing an opportunity to see this unique aircraft up-close alongside the unusual aircraft configuration of Model 281 Proteus.

“Proteus and the 401s have been doing incredibly important work for many years, and continue to today.” Said Greg Morris, President of Scaled Composites. “We are fortunate to be able to take a brief break in their flight test schedules to share these aircraft with the public.”

The Model 401 Sierra is a clean sheet design of a low-cost manufacturing technology demonstrator aircraft. The two Model 401 aircraft conduct payload development testing at medium altitudes for a wide variety of customers and are able to incorporate a diverse range of payload systems.

The Model 281 Proteus is the world’s most cost-effective high-altitude research aircraft. This extraordinary aircraft holds three world altitude records and has flown over 35 unique payloads since first flying in 1998, continuing to be an asset to the high-altitude research community.

Aviation Nation is one of the United States’ largest air shows, based at home of the Thunderbirds at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV. The air show features a wide variety of static displays and performers, with traditional and modern aircraft, from World War II to the latest designs.

To schedule a guided walkaround of the Model 401 Sierra and Model 281 Proteus during Aviation Nation, media should send name(s) and news organization to [email protected] by Friday, March 21, 2025.
